Rheumatic Heart Disease in Indigenous communities: a team member's observations

27 November 2014

Rheumatic Heart Disease is an entirely preventable disease that has not been seen in our cities since the early 1900’s. Yet its prevalence in indigenous communities is as high as in Third World countries.

Australia has its own Third World, hidden in the Northern Territory’s Top End, and it goes largely unseen by most Australians.

Michelle Gallant was a team member in a completed research project by Menzies School of Health Research and James Cook University. The project used echocardiography to screen 5000 school aged children across the Top End.

Michelle will share her observations of this field work and the social issues raised.

Survival Day 2014

The Hills Oxfam group supported Belgrave's seventh Survival Day on January 26. Entertainment was great, with Archie  Roach the lead singer.
The group stall focussed on Close the Gap campaign and offered face painting. We sold lots of campaign tshirts.

23 May, GROW campaign

Thursday, 23th May, at 7.30,  Lily Gardener, Oxfam Campaigns Coordinator, will speak to the Belgrave meeting about Oxfam's GROW campaign, along with project volunteer, Tim.

A billion people go to bed hungry each night, not because there isn’t enough food produced, but because of injustice in the way the system works.

Join in the conversation about food, life and the planet, and the issues of growing enough food sustainably to feed 7 billion people.

Belgrave Survival Day 2013

Hi I am Kathy, a volunteer with the Dandenong Ranges Oxfam group. On Australia Day we ran a Close the Gap stall at the Belgrave Survival Day Festival, a local community celebration of aboriginal culture, with aboriginal music, dance and stalls. We have done so for 6 years. We started with an umbrella and some stickers, pledge forms, a poster and tattoos for the kids.
Each year the festival has grown and so has our stall. We now do DIY face painting. Mums had great fun painting their own kids in aboriginal flag colours.
This year we added a Bush Tucker Biccies and Muffins stand with lemon myrtle and wattle seed shortbread. We also sold Oxfam shop Bush food, jams, herbs and sauces. We got heaps of pledges signed and people interested in doing their own events on Close the Gap Day, as well as raising some money.
It really is a fun day. Why not do your own activity like DIY face painting or bush tucker at your club or school for Close the Gap Day on March 21st, just register on the web site for information and materials.
